The Effect of the Delivery Format on Teaching Presence, Learning Presence, and Learning Outcomes in Distance Learning of Nursing Students: Synchronous versus Asynchronous Learning

- Purpose
This study was performed to explore the effect of the delivery format on teaching presence, learning presence, and learning outcomes in distance learning of nursing students.
Methods: A descriptive survey was conducted to understand teaching presence, learning presence, and learning outcomes depending on the delivery format of distance learning. Quota sampling methodology was used to recruit 295 nursing students from all over the country, and data collection was done from July 27 to September 10, 2020. The first delivery format for distance learning was synchronous learning in which communication between the instructor and students occurred simultaneously. The second delivery format was asynchronous learning in which prerecorded videos were provided and communication did not occur simultaneously.
Results: In synchronous learning, teaching presence (especially direct facilitation) and learning presence (especially emotional expression) had a statistical significance that was higher than in asynchronous learning. However, in learning outcomes, there was no statistically significant difference. There were significant positive correlations between teaching presence, learning presence, and learning outcomes, and there were significant positive correlations.
Conclusion: It can be suggested that learning outcomes can be improved if presence is improved in the distance learning environment based on the results of this study. It is necessary to add contact with nursing students and instructors to improve teaching presence in the asynchronous learning, and it is necessary to help students express their emotions to improve learning presence.

- Purpose
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of auricular acupressure therapy on sleep disorder and fatigue in menopausal women.
Methods
The study design was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design.
The participants were 40~60 years old women, assigned to the experimental group (n=25) or the control group (n=27). Auricular acupressure using vaccaria seeds was administered to the experimental group. The sessions continued for 6 weeks. Outcome measures included Pittsburgh sleep quality index, sleep meter, sleep diary, fatigue assessment instrument, serum cortisol, and serum serotonin.
Results
Menopausal women in the experimental group showed significant increases in deep sleep, light sleep, serotonin level and sleep duration compared with the control group.
Also, the experimental group reported decreases in PSQI, sleep latency, awakening time, fatigue and cortisol level compared with the control group.
Conclusion
Results show that auricular acupressure using vaccaria seeds is considered as an effective treatment for sleep disorder and fatigue in menopausal women. We conclude that it can be used as a nursing intervention method proven to reduce sleep disorder and fatigue in menopausal women.

- Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing care workers’ intention of hand hygiene implementation in long-term care hospitals.
Methods
A total of 180 care workers working at long-term care hospitals were recruited. Data collection was done from July 22 to September 7, 2018.
Results
The significant TPB variables influencing the intention of hand hygiene implementation were perceived behavior control (β=.41, p<.001), normative belief (β=.28, p<.001) and attitude toward behavior (β=.15, p=.014). These factors explain 39% of care workers’ intension of implementing hand hygiene in long-term care hospitals.
Conclusion
In order to strengthen the commitment of hand hygiene, it is necessary to have a positive attitude toward hand hygiene by eliminating the obstacles to hand hygiene.

- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to identify trends in research on cultural competency of nursing students and nurses in Korea and to provide suggestions for future studies.
METHODS
A literature search was conducted with 432 papers published between 1985 and 2016 from five electronic databases and other sources using such key words as ‘cultural competency’, ‘cultural nursing’, ‘multi-cultural competency’, ‘nursing students’, ‘nurses’, etc.
RESULTS
The research design of 86 nursing researches on the cultural competence of nurses and nursing students analyzed in this study was 90.7% in quantitative research, 9.3% in qualitative research, and 2.3% in mixed research. Cultural competence was the most measured concept. A total of 41 papers (47.7%) out of 86 papers were used to measure cultural competence. Ten different tools were used various instruments of cultural competency were used in 41 papers. In 11 experimental studies, new methods such as role playing, case study, four stage 3D puzzle model, newspaper reading, and writing reflection note were used other than traditional method of lecture.
CONCLUSION
The overall findings of this study suggest that future research should include more well-designed experimental studies, qualitative studies and repeated studies to confirm the effects of findings from previous studies. Development of effective and highly diverse teaching methods is recommended to increase cultural competency. Supporting systems and funding are required to help activate research of nurses.

- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to investigate the affecting factors according to gender in older adults by using the 2012 Korea Health Panel data.
METHODS
The Korea Health Panel data 2012 were collected from February to August 2012 by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs and National Health Insurance Corporation and the number of respondents were 1,921. The data were analyzed by t-test, chi-square, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN program.
RESULTS
The limitation of activity was the most influential factor for health-related quality of life of both male and female. For male, the affecting factors on HRQoL were hearing problems and frustration. For female, the affecting factors on HRQoL were eating problems, depression and suicidal impulses. Drinking, moderate physical activities, vision problems and stress had a significant effect on HRQoL for both male and female.
CONCLUSION
Health care providers should consider the differences between male and female when they design a program in order to improve HRQoL of older people.

- PURPOSE
This study was conducted to identify awareness levels and influencing factors of sexual harassment and gender egalitarianism among college students.
METHODS
This study was based on a questionnaire survey with a total of 1,244 college students. The copies of the questionnaire were collected from November 2 to December 20, 2011.
RESULTS
The average level of sexual harassment and gender egalitarianism among students from the Youngnam province was higher than those of other province. The average level of the sexual harassment and gender egalitarianism among those students who were majoring in healthcare sciences was higher than that among those who were majoring in other subjects than arts and sports sciences. The influencing factors on the recognition of gender egalitarianism were genders and sexual experiences. The influencing factors on the recognition of sexual harassment were genders and ages.
CONCLUSION
This study identified college students' awareness of sexual harassment, gender egalitarianism and influencing factors associated with them. It is expected that this study will be helpful for developing strategies for the prevention of sexual harassment for college students.

- In order to confirm the level of professional commitment and organizational commitment of the home health care nurses and the public health nurses, this study was carried out by using the Commitment Inventory developed by Meyer and Allen and modified by Rhee and others.
To compare the commitment level between two professionals, data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from the 61 home health care nurses and the 134 public health nurses working in 25 public health centers in Seoul.
The results are as follows : 1. Commitment level of the Home Health Care Nurses(4.7+/-0.7) was significantly higher than that of the Public Health Nurses(4.4+/-0.7). The level of the professional commitment of the home health care nurses(5.0+/-0.9) was higher than that of the Public Health Nurses(4.5+/-0.8). The level of the organizational commitment of the of Home Health Care Nurses(4.5+/-0.7) was higher than that of the public health nurses(4.3+/-0.6).
2. The higher of affective professional commitment was shown in the home health care nurses, and the higher level of continuance professional commitment was shown in the public health nurses.
The higher levels of normative professional commitment and affective organizational commitment were shown in the Home Health Care Nurses, and the higher level of continuance organizational commitment was shown in the home health care nurses. The higher level of normative organizational commitment was shown in the home health care nurses.
3. The level of professional commitment was statistically different in age and educational level. The level of affective professional commitment of the of home health nurses with higher-educated was higher than that of the lower-educated group. The level of organizational commitment of the Home Health Nurses in higher age was higher than that in lower age.
